How to log food: barcode, nutrition label, search, saved meals and photos

Fortior gives you five ways to log a meal, so you can start from what you have in front of you: a barcode, a nutrition label, a food name, a saved meal or a photo. Every method ends with a review screen before anything is saved.

Pick the fastest way to log

Start from what you have in front of you. Everything below starts on the Nutrition tab, and every method ends with a review screen before anything is saved.

How to log food by barcode

  1. On the Nutrition tab, tap Scan food. The camera opens with three modes: Scan Food, Barcode and Food label.
  2. Choose Barcode and hold the code steady in the frame. Fortior looks it up automatically.
  3. On the Serving screen, check the food and the nutrition, set how much you ate (see below), confirm the meal type and time, and tap Log.

Fortior checks foods already saved on your phone first, then its food catalog (USDA FoodData Central, fatsecret and foods other Fortior athletes have shared), and finally Open Food Facts, a community database that Fortior credits on the screen. Community data can contain mistakes, so compare the numbers with the package.

If nothing matches, you can scan the label instead, add the food yourself with its barcode, or log the meal manually. A food you save with a barcode is shared with the Fortior community so other athletes can scan it. Only the name, brand, serving and nutrition values are shared, and your account is never shown.

How to scan a nutrition label

  1. Tap Scan food, choose Food label, and fill the frame with the Nutrition Facts panel. Keep it flat and sharp.
  2. Fortior reads the text on your phone. Review the food name, serving, calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat first.
  3. Open More label details for serving weight, fiber, sugars, sodium, caffeine and any vitamins and minerals it found.
  4. Confirm to log it, or choose to save the food without logging it now.

Fields the label parser could not read stay blank, and Fortior does not guess them. If a food's calories differ widely from the calories its macros imply, Fortior flags it for you to check.

Tap Search to find a food by name. Results show the food, brand and a macro summary, and tapping one opens the serving screen. If a food is missing, you can create a private food with your own numbers.

Tap Saved for saved meals and recipes. To save something you already logged, open the meal in the Meals list and tap Save as saved meal. A saved meal is logged as portions of the whole. To repeat a meal, swipe it in the Meals list and tap Copy meal.

Meal photo estimates (Fortior Premium)

For a plate of mixed food, Scan Food mode can estimate the meal from up to three photos. It is part of Fortior Premium. When you tap Analyze food with AI, Fortior turns on Fortior AI, with the disclosure shown beside the button, and sends the photos you picked through its backend to an AI provider.

  1. Photograph the whole plate, ideally from above or at a 45° angle in good light.
  2. Review the ingredients Fortior lists. Change a serving, tap Add More for a missing food, or add a short correction and tap Update estimate with AI.
  3. If you weighed the food, enter its total weight. Grams are the default unit, and ounces are one tap away. Then tap Apply weight to all ingredients.
  4. Tap Log meal. Nothing is saved until you do.

An estimate is only an estimate. Photos can miss portions and hidden ingredients, which is why every item stays editable.

Servings or grams

The serving screen has a Measure switch with Servings and Grams. Servings suits foods with a defined serving, such as one bar. Grams suits anything you weigh, and it is the default for foods that come with no serving size. Weights are entered in grams (g).

One practical tip: raw and cooked weights differ, so pick the food entry that matches how you weighed it. For reference, 1 oz is about 28.35 g.

Logging for another day, and finishing a day

Use the date control at the top of Nutrition to log a meal for another day. Food for today uses the current time, and food for another day starts at a typical time for its meal type, which you can change. When you have logged everything, tap I'm done logging today under Food log status. Fortior treats unconfirmed days as partial logs.

In the app: open Nutrition, then Log. Scan food opens the camera. Search and Saved are beside it, and More holds Enter nutrition manually, Add water and Log a supplement.

Nutrition information here is educational and based on the food you log. Estimates from photos and databases can be off, and nothing here is medical advice.
